Mel Morris visits @DerbyHospitals @DerbyRenalTeam Renal Unit as part of @DerbyUni #iTrend Renal Dialysis research project

Mel Morris (l) and iTrend lead academics Profs Maarten Taal and Nick Selby at RDH Renal Unit

Mel Morris kindly volunteered to come over to the Renal Unit at Derby royal Hospital yesterday to spend some time hooked up to our data acquisition system on the iTrend Intelligent Technologies for Renal Dialysis project. In parallel with the 50 patient study which is now running, we use volunteers from the project to validate the data hardware.

These baseline sessions help us to confirm the accuracy of the real-time measurements collected from our patients in the study, so we’re really grateful to Mel for giving up his time and be not only connected up to ECG, BP and other instrumentation, but also to put in a really good effort on the resistance bike.

What’s the project about?

Quite simply, renal dialysis is mostly conducted as an open loop process, taking a certain amount of fluid off in a pre-set time. This project aims to close the loop via novel sensors and control algorithms to reduce the negative outcomes associated with major organ degradation.

The project is a collaboration between the Universities of Derby and Nottingham, runs for 3 years and is funded via Mel Morris’ MSTART Foundation.
